Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, once shared his idea on the two key actions for creating a new friend:
Tell them a secret
Ask them for a favour
It’s stuck with me for years. And, when I hear that truism, “a friend in need is a friend indeed” I hear it again - if you want to have friends you need to humble yourself and ask for help.
Friends are harder to come by as you get older. It’s not just because our social situations change, that families take priority, and our friendships grow deeper, though all of that is true.
A big reason why we struggle to add friends in our lives is our independence and pride. The cost of independence is not financial, or time or toil, but loneliness.
This is a hard lesson to truly apply.
