One of my favourite shows of all-time is Band of Brothers. For those poor souls who haven't seen it, it chronicles the history of the "Easy Company", 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, from their training camp days through major events in WWII. I love how they captured the camaraderie of that group of soldiers in Easy Company. In the battle of Normandy, they were brothers amidst a million men.
When I was envisioning what Frontier should look and feel and act like as an office culture, I listed group size as a critical element in overall chemistry. Our Frontier team is capped at 12 members, which the army describes as a squad or a section. It's very close. If we're going to survive the winter (fundraising season), we need to need each other. More isn't always better, and for better or worse at 30 people we'd have a different culture.
How big is your company? What's your ideal size?
Bonus Info -
Section/Squad: 8-12 people
Platoon: 15-30 people
Company: 80-150 people
Regiment - 2,000-4,000 people
Division - 10,000-15,000 people
